About Us
"JD's Expert Tree Service", started in 1980 by John Prentice in Prescott, Az. and later the name was changed to "Big Bear Tree Care". Big Bear Tree Care is a family business. John's wife, Shirley, sometimes works in the field and always runs the office. Their son, Isaiah, works full time and does most of the climbing. Other workers are hired as needed.
We have all the necessary equipment, including a crane, dump truck, and all the everyday tools to properly and safely complete your job.

John and Isaiah have 47 years combined experience which is their greatest qualification. John is also a certified Master Gardner in Yavapai County and a certified Pest Control Applicator, although he does not presently apply pesticides. He is also a certified Wildfire Defensible Landscape Professional.
Sometimes people want a phone or computer quote, but there is no substitute for a site visit and they are free!! So take advantage and have us look at your job and we can give you a precise and competitive bid. There is no obligation or hard sell tactics!

Over the years, we have removed literally thousands of large trees, especially during the Ips Bark Beetle epidemic of 2002 -2006. Whether a tree is dead, in the wrong place, dangerous, or you just don't want it anymore, you won't find anyone with more experience in tree removal.
Most trees need regular trimming to remove dead or dangerous branches, maintain symmetry, or to thin out branches. Every tree is different and trees can be damaged or killed by improper trimming.
Fruit trees present special challenges and require patience and experience. Proper pruning at least once every three years is vital for the health of your fruit trees; every year or two is even better.
The use of fertilizer on trees is one of the most neglected aspects of tree care. Trees in the wild don't require added nutrients because they make their own. Around most home landscapes, leaves are raked and the natural cycle is broken. Let us help you prevent tree malnutrition by fertilizing your trees.
