About Diamond Cut Grade

The cut of a diamond does not refer to its shape (princess, round, or oval) as is often assumed, but to the diamond’s proportions, its symmetry and the quality of its polish. The cut of the gem has more to do with the beauty of the stone than any other factor, so it is often assigned a diamond cut grade. The cut affects three areas of beauty that are highly valued by the consumer:

  • Brilliance
  • Fire
  • Scintillation (sparkle)

To make accurate comparisons between diamonds, they are each assigned a diamond cut grade.

Factors Affecting the Cut Grade

The cut grade must be one of the number one considerations when it comes to buying and selling diamonds. There are several factors to study before the grade can be established:

  • Facet shapes and angles
  • Girdle width (The girdle is the perimeter of the diamond at the bottom of the crown. Most diamonds for jewelry have a faceted girdle.)
  • Culet size (The culet is the small area at the bottom of the diamond. It may be the tip at the very bottom, or it could be a small facet.)
  • Polish
  • Symmetry

In general, the diamond cut grade refers to the quality of the diamond’s proportions from the facets and angles to the width of the crown. Each facet is affected and affects the beauty of the entire diamond, so the interaction between facets is a crucial component in determining the value of a diamond.
