Ulys and Thelma Schmidgall moved from Eldon Idaho to Yuma in 1951.

Ulys had worked in one of the local body shops. In 1952 he decided he would go into business for himself. That’s when Smitty’s Body Shop opened up.

Ulyses son Kenny would come down in the winters from Idaho to help his dad out at the shop. After seven years of traveling back and forth in the winter, Kenny decided to move his family down to Yuma in 1958. Kenny soon became manager and in 1970 he and his wife Carol became the new owner of Smitty’s. So another generation started.

Kenny’s son Rob was 14 yrs old when he started working with his dad at Smitty’s. He began as a sweeper. Rob worked his way up to become a bodyman. In 1983 Kenny was in a fatal car accident and Rob was soon filling his dad’s shoes.

Carol and Rob continued to carry on the family business. In 2000 Rob and his wife Debbie became the new owners of Smitty’s, so a third generation began. Smitty’s Body Shop will continue to serve the Yuma Community with quality paint and collision repair.
