On October 27th, 2011 I took my 3 month old puppy Natasha for a walk in an empty parking lot. It was the ideal place to begin training her off leash. In the twilight of the afternoon the lot was empty and we were far from any roads.

After a few minutes of having her follow me around she took off on a dead run after a cat. I was only 20 feet behind her screaming and waving my arms as a minivan entered the lot and ran over Natasha’s hind leg.I have never witnessed an animal get hit by a vehicle and I was severely traumatized. The elderly driver got out and told me that even though my dog was white and it was still day light, she simply couldn’t see her. Apparently the driver was cutting through the parking lot looking for a business that was on the other side of town.

I took Natasha into a veterinarian and had her leg surgically rebuilt. She will have two metal rods and four wires in her knee for the remainder of her life in addition to an 8” scar. After surgery and six excruciating weeks of mandatory cage rest, her rehabilitation began. The closest animal rehab center was 90 miles from my house and required two appointments per week for eight weeks. Fortunately due to advanced medicine and a significant amount of money – Natasha rehabilitated well and can live a full life including running, jumping, swimming and all of the normal activities dogs enjoy.

Tasha SmileThis experience is the sole reason that Robert’s Safety Innovations LLC was created. Immediately after the accident I started searching the market for safety devices for my dogs. I found many “glow collars”, “reflective collars” and “LED attachments” – unfortunately none of these were very bright, none of them were water resistant, most of them had to be cut to length and none of them were rechargeable. Most of the “glow collars” on the market use watch batteries which have to be replaced every other day; additionally most of them are made of cheap plastic and won’t hold up to use as a regular lead.

I have created and evaluated hundreds of prototypes and used these experiences to create “The Safety Collar™”. This collar rises above the competition incorporating every safety and usability feature imagined. It is extremely bright, inexpensive, durable, rechargeable, water resistant, has backup reflective strips and was created to be used as an everyday collar.
